Sick Leave for Hourly Employees

The following outlines the sick leave provisions of the current agreement between the Colleges and the Service Employees International Union, Local 200-C, AFL-CIO.

Members of the bargaining unit will receive a sick leave allotment as follows, to be used, if needed, for personal illness or illness in the immediate family, and which will be paid when taken at each member's regular straight time hourly rates.

1) Amount:

The amount of sick leave available to an employee is dependent upon the number of hours paid by the Colleges to the employee. Sick leave is earned, beginning on the first day of work in a bargaining unit position, on each hour paid (each hour paid includes hours worked plus time off paid for directly by the Colleges and the Colleges alone) by each employee up to 40 per week at an accrual rate of .047 hours of sick time for each hour paid. (For a normal 37.5 hour work week, the employee will earn 1.76 hours of sick time. For the year, based on 1860 eligible work hours, the employee would earn 87.42 hours or 11 2/3 days.)

2) Maximum Limits:

The maximum accrual for sick leave will be based on the annual hours the employee is scheduled to work up to the hourly equivalent of 100 work days. In total, no more than 715 hours of sick leave may be accrued and remain unused.

3) Payment of Sick Leave:

Sick time will be paid based upon the regularly scheduled hours of work. It may be taken and will be paid in half-hour increments. Sick leave will not be paid for in excess of the amount accrued and unused. Under no circumstances will unused sick leave be paid out upon death, termination of employee, or resignation. Paid sick leave may not be taken and will not be paid during the probation period.

4) Disability Supplement:

Available sick time may be used to supplement statutory disability payments to achieve full regularly schedule daily pay.

5) Obligations to Apply for Disability or Workers' Compensation Benefits:

Employees eligible to apply for Disability or Workers' Compensation benefits must do so and shall be eligible for sick leave benefits pursuant to this Article only if they make every reasonable effort to obtain the applicable Disability or Workers' Compensation benefits. If the employee has received compensation from the Colleges for the time involved, such Disability or Workers' Compensation insurance proceeds shall inure to the benefit of the Colleges and the Employee shall not be deemed to have been paid "by the colleges and the Colleges alone" for such period.

When an employee has used sick leave for a period covered by Disability or Workers' Compensation benefit, the Colleges will recredit the employee with sick leave equal to the amount represented by the Disability or Workers' Compensation benefits received by the Colleges.
