Hobart and William Smith
Colleges have a special affiliate relationship with ASE, Advanced Studies
in England, which in turn is affiliated with University College, Oxford,
to provide opportunities for students to participate in a semester length
program in Bath. This program is based in the beautiful 18th century
city of Bath, where students are integrated into British culture through
living in the city, having membership of the University of Bath Student
Union, and through volunteer opportunities in the area. This program
incorporates a two week residency at University College, Oxford University,
and one week in Stratford-upon-Avon.
PROGRAM
DATES
Fall) August 27 to December 15, 2001 (Spring) January 28 to May 25,
2002
ACCOMMODATIONS
Students reside in furnished residential flats in the City of Bath.
All of the housing is on a self?catering basis which means that students
are very quickly immersed in the commercial world of the city.
EXCURSIONS
In addition to the Oxford residency, all students on the program spend
four days in Stratford-upon-Avon where they will spend most of their
time in one of three Royal Shakespeare theatres. Students will attend
five or six plays and other sites managed by the Shakespeare Trust.
In addition, there will be course related study visits and trips to
London, a series of Welsh Border castles, Hampton Court, the Lake District,
Oxford, Cornwall and other locations.
ELIGIBILITY
The program is open to Juniors and Seniors with exceptionally well qualified
Sophomores eligible in the spring program. Entry requirements are a
3.0 GPA and two academic recommendations. Please note that competition
for the program is very high and there are a limited number of spaces
each semester for HWS students. A solid academic record as reflected
in the GPA and a carefully written essay are important parts of a successful
application.
APPROXIMATE
COSTS
Participants will be charged the regular tuition, $500 administrative
fee, and room and board fees (prorated for the longer term). This charge
covers credit for a four course semester, housing, a meal allowance,
all fees charged by ASE, and all excursions required as part of the
program. Students' regular financial aid will be applied to the charges
for this program with some adjustments with respect to work study. The
cost for Fall 2001 or Spring 2002 is $16,332. Additional costs include
airfare, trainfare to and from bath, books and materials and personal
independent travel and expenses. These additional costs vary according
to individual needs and tastes, but we estimate a total of at least
$2350.
COURSE
DESCRIPTIONS
Students who participate in this program can select courses from classical
studies, the fine arts, history, literature, philosophy/religion, politics,
women's studies, psychology/education and independent studies. A special
division of the ASE program offers two courses in education: "The Theory
and Practice of Teaching in England" and a school placement practicum
in a local primary or secondary school. Highly qualified students may
also able to participate in internships. These are primarily for students
interested in architecture, town planning and museum work. For specific
information about courses and the program, please pick up the "Advanced
Studies in England" program booklet from the Office of Off-Campus Programs
in Coxe Hall.
