Study Program
Hobart and William Smith Colleges are an affiliate school of Denmark's
International Studies Program (DIS) to offer an off-campus program in
Copenhagen, capital of the oldest kingdom in the world and one of the
most advanced countries in Europe. At DIS students can take classes
(over 70 courses) taught in English by an outstanding group of faculty
who are all experts in their fields. Study tours to other European countries
(Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, and other parts of Northern Europe
and Scandinavia), two housing choices (either with a Danish family or
in an international student residence), and above all, a challenging
academic environment create an opportunity for a unique off-campus experience.
PROGRAM
DATES
(Fall) August 25 to December 20, 2001 (Spring) January 22 to May 23,
2002
ACCOMMODATIONS
Students can choose between residing with a local Danish family, carefully
chosen for their interest in hosting an international student, or in
a furnished residential hall with Danish and other international students.
The residential hall, kollegium, is self?catering and students will
need to plan to do their own food shopping and to share a kitchen with
about 16 other students. Those who choose the kollegium housing option
should budget about $1200 for food, which is not billed by HWS.
EXCURSIONS
Regular excursions include major field trips to Moscow, St. Petersburg,
Berlin, Prague, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Helsinki as part of the curricular
programs and an introductory three to four day study tour of either
other parts of Denmark or of Stockholm for all students.
ELIGIBILITY
The program is open to all Juniors and Seniors who have achieved a GPA
in the range of 3.0.
APPROXIMATE
COSTS
The cost for participation in the DIS program for either semester is
the regular HWS tuition, $500 administrative fee, and HWS room and board
charges for 2001-2002 charge are $16,841. Please note that the dormitory
option does not include a meal plan and students will need to budget
for food expenses on their own. The homestay option is the more cost
effective choice for participants in that a full meal plan is included.
This cost covers credit for a four course semester in fall and in the
spring, housing (and board if the family stay is chosen), rental of
a complete set of textbooks, xeroxed handouts, all designated field
study events, complete use of all DIS facilities including library and
computer lab. Students' regular financial aid will be applied to the
charges for this program with some adjustments for work study. Additional

personal expenses estimated at $2200.
