Position Description

Assistant Professor, Architectural Design - Tenure Track

Department of Art

The Department of Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) invites applications for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of Architectural Design, effective July 1, 2008 .

Qualifications include a Master’s of Architecture degree and a strong record of architectural design; teaching experience is strongly preferred, as is an architecture license. Candidates should possess a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to an interdisciplinary architectural pedagogy focused on foundation design principles within an undergraduate, liberal arts setting, rather than vocational skills training within a professional program. They should be able to convey a strong sense of the creative process and methods of design, relevant to the subsequent pursuit of graduate studies in architecture, urban planning, or industrial design. The successful candidate will help develop new offerings in design, portfolio design, as well as CAD and other methods of architectural representation, and contribute to the general curriculum in the form of cross-listed courses and first year seminars. Responsibilities include: teaching five courses per year, supervision of a 7 station computer lab, advising, and service on department and institutional committees.

HWS enjoys brand new studio art facilities, and vigorous programs in studio art, art history, and architectural studies, as well as interdisciplinary programs in media and society and aesthetics.  Our Architectural Studies program is unique in that we offer in house design studios staffed by practicing architects. While not accredited by NCARB, most of our majors choose to pursue graduate architecture degrees.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Application materials must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2008 and include a cover letter, CV, teaching philosophy, personal statement, examples of current work and student work in portfolio format, and a SASE for return of submitted materials. Indicate if attending College Art Association conference. In addition, arrange for three letters of reference to be sent directly to the Search Chair. All material should be sent to:
