Department of Anthropology and Sociology

The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a one-year leave replacement position in sociology beginning August, 2008.

The successful candidate will teach five courses (two in one semester and three in the other) in several of the following areas of emphasis: criminology, delinquency, race and ethnicity, sociology of sport, and/or medical sociology.  Ph.D. in sociology preferred but not required.

Founded as Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women, Hobart and William Smith Colleges today are a highly selective residential liberal arts institution with a single administration, faculty and curriculum but separate dean’s offices, student governments, athletic programs and traditions. The Colleges are located in a small diverse city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. With an enrollment of 1,928, the Colleges offer 62 different majors and minors from which students choose two areas of concentration, one of which must be an interdisciplinary program. The Department of Anthropology and Sociology has a strong record of attracting and serving students and has excellent office and classroom facilities. Candidates should find especially attractive opportunities to participate in the Colleges’ extensive foreign study programs and numerous interdisciplinary programs and departments, including those in Environmental Studies; Latin American Studies; Cognition, Logic, and Language; Critical Social Studies; Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Studies; Media and Society; Urban Studies; and Women’s Studies. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are committed to attracting and supporting faculty and staff comprised of women and men that fully represent the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the nation and actively seek applications from under-represented groups.
